Art Week 1 (6th 6 weeks)

This 6 weeks we will be learning how to draw the human body in movement . Watch the video linked below on how to do quick gesture drawings. These gesture drawings will look like the person is in mid-action like running or walking. We will create these with simple shapes like squares, triangles and lines to get the basic movement down. Focus on things like bend in the knees, arms and hips (joints). You can ask someone at home to be your model and get them to pose in a way that looks like they are running, jumping or dancing. Give yourself about 30 seconds to draw  them quickly. Remember to use simple shapes like ovals or lines for the arms. triangles or squares for the torso (body). Split your paper into 4 sections and practice 4 times with 4 different poses.  Send me a picture of your gesture drawings for this weeks grade.

Next week we will make these gesture drawing evolve into more realistic people.

Week 6 Art Aquarium-Installation Art

This week we will look at some examples of installation art. Installation art is an art piece that takes up a large area of space. Usually an entire room. Our installation piece will be located by the Kindergarten classrooms. Our aquarium piece will be filled with artworks of different animals that would spend its days in the water.

You will be creating an art piece of the very beautiful starfish. Starfish come in so many different forms. Your artwork can be a cartoon starfish or a realistic one. Most of us here at school are making cartoon starfish. We added cartoon eyes and a smile. We also included a setting of things around our starfish like rocks, seaweed, schools of which and bubbles. Look at the examples below for inspiration.

This 6 weeks we will focus on creating sculptures. A couple of weeks ago, I sent you a message about supplies you would need to mix your own paste mix. Those items include flour, salt, liquid glue and water. Watch the video below to show you the steps to make your mixture. You may need an adult to help. We will mix our own paper mache paste to create our sculptures.

Watch the planet info video below. While you are watching, think about what planet you would like to create as your sculpture. Then watch my instructional video to show you how to form your planet and apply your paper mache. This week we will create our form and next week we will paint it. It will need plenty of time to dry.

Basketball Unit

This 6 weeks we will begin our basketball unit. We will learn the most important skills of basketball such as Dribbling, passing and shooting. Triple Threat is one of the most important skill positions to learn if you want to be a good basketball player. Out of the "Triple Threat" position you can do 3 things; dribble, pass and shoot.

We will do the same lesson as last week. I would like for you to shoot at a goal 10 times from about 3 feet away from the front of the goal. If you do not have a basketball goal you can shoot at a spot on a hard wall/surface. Keep track of how many shots you make or number of times you hit your spot.

This week we will work on our shooting form. If you have a basketball goal at home, you will need to use it for your shooting. If you do not have a basketball goal, use the side of your house or hard surface to shoot the ball at. Grab a ball and get into Triple Threat. Raise the ball above your head with your elbow pointing towards the basket or target in a straight up/down angle. Your knees should be bent at this moment. Start to jump upwards creating power to push the ball towards the basket. While you are jumping upwards you should be pushing the ball upwards towards your basket. Your guide hand, or non-dominate hand, should help "assist" the ball on its upward motion but should not help you shoot the ball. You should release the ball when your elbow is fully straight, pushing the ball off with you fingers making the ball spin backwards. Your index and middle fingers of your shooting hand should be the last thing to touch the basketball. We call this the "Follow Through" motion when you are releasing the ball. You should almost flick your wrist forward after you have shot the ball, acting like you could pick the ball out of the rim.

Please watch the video below for your visual help. It will help you understand the skill better.

This week we will be going over the "overhead pass". This is a pass used to get the ball to a teammate that is further away or over the other teams defenders. To perform this pass start in Triple threat position, then move the ball above your head. While moving the ball you will need to place your hands on the sides of the basketball. You will need to step to your target and start bringing the ball forward, releasing it while it is in in front of your head. Depending on how far away your target is will determine where your release point needs to be. Once you have passed the ball your palms should be pointing outward and your thumbs downward. Change up your distances when practicing this pass. If you do not have a partner to pass to just use a wall or hard surface.

This week we will be going over the bounce pass. The bounce pass is very similar to the chest pass but we are bouncing the ball to our teammate. Each skill is the same as a chest pass, we want to bring the ball to our chest, hands on the sides of the basketball, and elbows slightly pointed outward. We want to step with the same sided foot as your shooting hand, creating power to get the ball to your target. We want to bounce the ball a little further than halfway between our teammate. Push the ball away from your chest in a downward angle to where it will bounce and hit your teammate in the chest area. Make sure when you pass the ball your thumbs are behind the ball, pushing the ball forward. This may take a couple of tries to figure out how far to make the pass. Continue to practice your regular chest pass while your working on your bounce pass.

This week we will be learning how to properly pass a basketball. There are 3 different ways to pass a basketball; the chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass. We will only focus on the chest pass this week. Like all things, we will start in the triple threat position then bring the ball to our chest. To make a good, strong chest pass you will need to step forward with the foot that is on the same side as your shooting hand, as your stepping you should be pushing off of your back leg. (This is where you generate the power for your pass). You should bring the ball to your chest and move your hands to the sides of the basketball. Push the ball away from your chest to your target. Once your have passed the ball, your palms should be facing outward and our thumbs should be pointing down, creating backspin on the ball as it approaches your teammate. Practice the chest pass with another person until you get the hang of it. If you do not have someone to pass the ball to, use a wall or a hard surface to pass the ball against.

Basketball Unit

Triple Threat is one of the most important skill positions to learn if you want to be a good basketball player. Out of the "Triple Threat" position you can do 3 things; dribble, pass and shoot.

This week we will be practicing the "Crossover" dribble while moving. During a game of basketball you should see players moving down the court while dribbling the ball, but anytime they need to change directions they normally use a crossover dribble. This helps keep the defender from stealing the ball away from you, leading to a turnover. You cannot expect to get down the court only dribbling with one hand. If you are moving down the court in the "Left" direction, then you should be using your "Left" hand to dribble the ball. When you are needing to change your direction or start moving in the "Right" direction, you should use the crossover dribble, transferring the ball from your left hand to your right hand. This will help you get down the floor quicker without getting trapped by the defense.

Practice getting in Triple Threat position and start moving in a left or right direction while dribbling a ball in the correct hand. You can set out cones in a zig zag pattern to help identify a landmark on when to use the crossover dribble. Perform this drill until you can successfully dribble the ball without losing control.

🖼 Forms and Shading-Week 1

Practice shading. You can print the practice sheet below or you can redraw it on your own paper. Using your pencil, press harder to create a darker color and lighter to create a lighter color. Practice copying the shades in the blank squares like the one illustrated on the top. Then practice on the spheres. On the blank sphere you can use a Kleenex or tissue to help blend the colors together. Your goal is to get a smooth transition from dark to light.

Check in on the Google Forms.
