Strength grows in New Deal Middle School

By Mahalei Romero

New Deal Middle school has made t-shirts, buttons, keychains, and bracelets to show support for the family of New Deal Middle School student Dominique Mejia, who tragically passed away recently. Dom was a 7th grade student, who participated in band and athletics and was loved by many. Over the last couple of weeks, the students and staff have come together with the community for support through the saddness of Dom’s passing. Classmate Conner Vasquez said, “Everyone wants to show support for Dom’s family, and I think that’s a wonderful thing.”
Mrs. Fulcher, a middle school teacher, made and sold buttons that pictured Dominique. “It was a really wonderful thing how much support New Deal got from not only family and friends, but other schools, and really the whole community who got together and helped with recovery,” Mrs. Fulcher said.
New Deal Middle school has had a lot of support from other schools because of the recent loss of this student. Ropes ISD made a generous donation for the family, and Abernathy made green and gold ribbons and sent them to NDMS. Our neighboring schools’ support is very much appreciated and has helped students realize that competition isn’t everything and that other schools will support each other when it’s needed. Student Sofia Romero said, “The support that we have gotten, we’ll always remember.”
On October 18, Dominique’s birthday, the Middle School students and staff celebrated his life in his absence by having a school wide birthday parthy. This time together, remembering who Dom was as a friend to so many, will hopefully help in the healing process. Dominique Mejia will never be forgotten.
